On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) modifying the compliance timeline for its ADA Title II website accessibility requirements. The rule extends the original deadlines by one year. Under the revised schedule, larger public entities—defined as municipalities serving populations of 50,000 or more—now have until April 26, 2027 to comply. All other public entities, including smaller municipalities, have until April 26, 2028.

 

In addition, DOJ announced that it is considering launching a separate, new rulemaking that could further revise the scope or requirements of ADA Title II web accessibility compliance for K–12 schools. In an accompanying, unpublished letter, DOJ specifically referenced data and feedback submitted by 91ÖÆƬ members, highlighting the significant operational, technical, and financial challenges school districts face in meeting the current mandate.
