When a Contract Ends but the Job’s Calling Continues
June 01, 2026
My View
There are moments in leadership that are both deeply personal and profoundly public. Sitting at a school board meeting while members vote on your contract renewal is one of those moments. The discussion is procedural. The vote is brief. And yet the weight is unmistakable.
A few months ago, my board voted to officially notify me that I would not be offered a new contract and that the board intended to conduct a national search for my successor. While I will remain in my position through the end of my contract this summer, I am now faced with great uncertainty and am experiencing what an increasing number of superintendents have been forced to confront.
I would be less than honest if I said I was not devastated. I have poured my heart, my soul, my blood, sweat and tears into this district I have called home for the past 10 years. Serving as a superintendent is not simply a job. It is a calling, a covenant and a commitment to a community. You invest in students’ futures, partner with families, support staff through challenges and navigate the complexities of budgets, facilities and politics.
