At a budget meeting, the chief finance officer was emphasizing to other district leaders the need to find budget efficiencies. The district athletic director whispered (a little too loudly) to his neighbor, 鈥淪he couldn鈥檛 find potato salad at a church picnic.鈥 The next morning, the superintendent received a grievance from the finance officer, claiming a violation of the district鈥檚 harassment policy.
Harassment Defined
Many districts have policies requiring civility and professionalism in the workplace, but there is no legal requirement that co-workers be likable, pleasant or easy to work with. Some people are simply gruff, blunt or loud by nature. The point at which individual personality traits cross the line into impermissible workplace harassment can sometimes be indistinct.
