Roy Hamblen retired from Mendham High School last June after 35 years of teaching and coaching. You probably don鈥檛 know him. But maybe you should. He鈥檚 part of a soon-to-be-lost generation of teachers and coaches who have materially changed lives.

How did they do it? Well, it wasn鈥檛 with creative pedagogy, although some have it. It wasn鈥檛 with new technology, although many use it. And it wasn鈥檛 with a fancy learning space. They didn鈥檛 need it.

What Hamblen did and others of his ilk do was really simple, well established and effective: They deeply cared for kids, they held high expectations, and they tolerated nothing less.
