Schools and Communities Intertwined
I鈥檝e spent a lot of time watching webinars on all sorts of subjects in K-12 education over the past couple of years, which has been a great learning regimen for a desk-based editor. In recent months, there鈥檚 been plenty of online opportunities to learn about full-service community schools, a concept that makes so much sense at this moment coming out of a disruptive public health crisis.
The Learning Policy Institute has been at the center of promoting the concept, especially as the U.S. Department of Education prepared this fall to receive grant applications for the use of $68 million, the largest-ever funding for community schooling. Grant announcements are expected soon.
Anna Maier, a lead policy adviser at the Learning Policy Institute, serves as our principal contributor on the subject this month. She has worked on community school implementation with several school districts and draws heavily on that knowledge in her writing. Our readers may find her companion article on the blending and braiding of federal, state and local funds of particular value.
