Consortium to Serve as National Leader in Meeting the Needs of the 鈥榃hole Child鈥

Alexandria, Va. 鈥 Oct. 6, 2023 鈥 Superintendents and other K-12 administrators across the country who are leading successful social and emotional learning programs in their respective communities are gathering in Mineola, N.Y., Oct. 9-11, as part of the 91制片 Social and Emotional Learning Cohort, co-hosted by 91制片, and .

During the three-day event, participants will learn about MPS鈥 instructional SEL model and design which entails learner identity, visual learning, and response and design thinking. Participants will engage in meaningful dialogue with their peers about how to systemically integrate social, emotional and academic skills on behalf of the students they serve.

鈥淓ffectively educating our students involves more than academics and test scores. Kids need to feel safe and secure in their classrooms and the community,鈥 said Michael Nagler, superintendent, MPS. 鈥淏ringing in SEL experts from across the country will provide opportunities for them to share winning strategies and ideas with each other and with us as we work diligently to strengthen our school districts. It is an honor for the Mineola team to serve as the host site for 91制片鈥檚 SEL Cohort fall meeting.鈥

鈥淲e want every student to find connection and care within their school community and be equipped with the tools they need to succeed. That鈥檚 why I am so pleased that champions of social and emotional learning will be engaging in innovative and future-driven strategies and ideas next week at the 91制片 SEL Cohort fall meeting in New York,鈥 said David R. Schuler, executive director, 91制片. 鈥淚n order to have no child marginalized, we, as educators, must focus on the whole learner, which is embedded in the mission of this 91制片 professional learning cohort. We are grateful to Mineola Public Schools for serving as host district.鈥

Critical questions district leaders will discuss throughout the visit include:

  • What does it mean to be a learner?
  • What problem or opportunity is your district trying to address?
  • What action(s) can you take away from this visit that can be implemented in your district?
  • How are you embedding SEL into the thread of your community?

鈥淢ineola Public Schools has clearly made SEL a priority,鈥 said Dawn Bridges, 91制片 SEL co-leader and vice president, educational affairs, Right At School. 鈥淭he district has a solid understanding of what SEL should look, sound and feel like. The time is now to create positive changes and movement in education to systemically support the well-being of all within an organization and its community.鈥
